EYELIDOPTRAIN
An eyelid lift, eyelid correction or also known as blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure within aesthetic plastic surgery that is intended to achieve an optically rejuvenating effect in the eye area. The skin around the eyes is very thin and fine and is subjected to great strain by natural facial expressions. Droopy eyelids can occur not only with the decline in tissue elasticity with age, but even at a young age. Droopy eyelids can arise, for example, due to genetic conditions and environmental influences, which result in a weakening of the eye connective tissue and muscles. This happens when the fatty tissue of the eye socket is pushed forward. Especially in the area of the lower eyelid, this is often accompanied by swelling of the tissue, popularly known as “tear bags”. Frequent sunbathing, smoking, an unbalanced diet, too little sleep and stress can also affect the appearance around the eyes at a young age.
When eyelid lifting, a distinction is made between tightening the upper and lower eyelids. If there is appropriate medical indication, both procedures can be combined. A simultaneous eyebrow lift with an overall lowered eye area can also be done or is recommended.
UPPER EYELID TIGHTENING
During upper eyelid surgery, excess skin, fatty tissue and muscles on the upper eyelid are removed and tightened, making the upper eyelid more attractive again. First, the areas to be corrected are sketched out. A fine skin incision is then made along the natural fold of the eyelid along these markings. Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed and the incision area is finely sutured. In some cases, an eyelid correction/eyelid lift alone cannot achieve the desired aesthetic result. Then it makes sense to also raise your eyebrows. In most cases, an upper eyelid correction is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or in twilight sleep. The procedure itself usually takes 45 minutes.
LOWER EYELOPE TIGHTENING
Similar to the upper eyelid lift, the lower eyelid correction involves removing the excess tissue through a fine skin incision below the lower eyelids (eyelashes) and then sewing it up. The fat pads in eye bags are reupholstered or partially removed.
The lower eyelid lift procedure takes around 1.5 - 2 hours and is carried out in twilight sleep (also under general anesthesia if desired) on an outpatient basis or with a one-night hospital stay. As with upper eyelid surgery, the stitches are removed after about 7-8 days. There are no visible external scars and the facial expression takes on a more alert and fresher appearance.
RISKS AND RECOVERY
As with any surgical procedure, risks cannot be completely ruled out. However, they can be drastically minimized through detailed information to the patient, professional implementation and careful aftercare. Swelling and discoloration in the eye area are normal side effects of an eyelid correction and will subside after a few days.
The swelling after eyelid correction usually subsides within 4 to 6 days. However, remnants of the bruise may still be visible after 8 to 12 days, especially in the area of the lower eyelids. The result of surgical eyelid lift is permanent.
