BREAST REDUCTION
A breast reduction is a plastic surgery operation that is not only carried out for aesthetic reasons in most cases, but rather is preceded by a medical indication. The aim of a breast reduction is to reduce the size of particularly large breasts and thus reduce their weight. Both fatty and glandular tissue and excess skin are removed. The breast is given a new shape.
Breast reduction helps to relieve physical discomfort caused by very large breasts. Reducing the weight of the breasts reduces the heavy strain on the back, neck and shoulder area. Pain in these areas caused by constant strain and intrusive bra straps can be reduced through breast surgery. Sore spots and eczema under the breasts caused by constant friction can also heal in this way.
The surgeon can remove fatty and glandular tissue from the breast, reducing its volume and weight. The resulting excess skin is removed. In order to achieve an aesthetic and symmetrical result, the nipple must now be repositioned. The incisions are then carefully sutured and wound drains are placed. Any resulting wound secretion can drain through this. The drains are removed the day after the breast reduction. The operation usually lasts one to two hours. It is carried out under general anesthesia and on an inpatient basis and requires a one-day hospital stay. Only in rare cases does the procedure take place on an outpatient basis.
RISKS AND RECOVERY
As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks of complications with breast reduction. Swelling, bruising and redness are normal after such an operation and will subside on their own over time. For the first six weeks after the operation, the patient must wear a special support bra that protects the breast and supports wound healing. You should allow yourself around two to three weeks of rest. After about six weeks, the patient can do sports again. The final result of the operation can be assessed approximately three to six months after the procedure.
